Local high schools welcome exchange students from Paraguay
By 6News Staff on January 29, 2012
Both Lawrence and Free State High Schools welcomed the fourth group of exchange students from Paraguay Sunday afternoon. Each January, a new group comes to the United States to study the English language and learn more about the American culture.
This time, nine students traveled thousands of miles to see what Lawrence, Kansas is like. Director of the exchange program says Kansas and Paraguay have a special relationship, creating a successful program that has been going strong for four years.
Seven of the students are at Free State High School, while the other two are at Lawrence High. Each of them is staying with a host family for the three weeks they are in Lawrence.
Lisa Escurra, one of the exchange students, says she is really enjoying herself. She says it is an amazing.
While, each of the students say their experiences have been great, they add schools in Lawrence are completely different from what they’re used to.
Escurra says, “Here we change rooms and classes throughout the day, but in Paraguay, we stay in the same room all day and the teachers come and go.”
There is one thing in particular that they want to see during their stay in Kansas. And that is snow. Each of them said they would like to come back and visit as much as possible.
Students from Lawrence High School and Free State can study in Paraguay during the summer months.
